HST
Hubble Space Telescope. A space telescope that was launched into low Earth orbit in 1990 and remains in operation, providing high-resolution images of space.
ROSCOSMOS
Russian Federal Space Agency. The governmental body responsible for the space science program of the Russian Federation and general aerospace research.
OSIRIS-REx
Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer. A NASA asteroid study and sample-return mission that launched in 2016 to study asteroid Bennu.
SLS
Space Launch System. NASA's rocket designed to provide a safe, affordable and sustainable means of reaching beyond our current limits and opening new doors of discovery from the unique vantage point of space.
ESA
European Space Agency. An intergovernmental organization dedicated to the exploration of space, with 22 member states.
NASA
National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The United States government agency responsible for the nation's civilian space program and for aeronautics and aerospace research.
ISS
International Space Station. A space station, or a habitable artificial satellite, that serves as a microgravity and space environment research laboratory.
ISRO
Indian Space Research Organisation. The space agency of the Government of India, responsible for space research and exploration.
ALMA
Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. An astronomical interferometer of radio telescopes in the Atacama desert of northern Chile.
NEO
Near-Earth Object. A term referring to asteroids and comets with orbits that bring them into proximity with Earth.
NRO
National Reconnaissance Office. A member of the United States Intelligence Community and the agency in charge of designing, building, launching, and maintaining America's intelligence satellites.
VLT
Very Large Telescope. A telescope operated by the European Southern Observatory on Cerro Paranal in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile.
JAXA
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The Japanese national aerospace agency responsible for space and planetary research, satellite deployment, and human spaceflight.
FCC
Falcon Crew Capsule. A spacecraft developed by SpaceX intended to carry crew to the ISS and other destinations, not to be confused with the Federal Communications Commission.
BFR
Big Falcon Rocket (also known as Starship). SpaceX's privately funded, fully reusable launch system and spacecraft intended for missions to Mars and beyond.
CNSA
China National Space Administration. The national space agency of China responsible for the coordination of space activities for civilian and defense purposes.
LHC
Large Hadron Collider. The world's largest and highest-energy particle collider and the largest machine in the world, located at CERN.
ULA
United Launch Alliance. A joint venture of Lockheed Martin and Boeing that provides space launch services to the U.S. government.
CERN
European Organization for Nuclear Research. One of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research, particularly in the field of particle physics.
GSLV
Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle. An expendable launch vehicle used by ISRO to launch satellites into geostationary orbits.
