Maggie
She is scarred from a house fire, shy, and has a darker complexion than Dee. Maggie is humble, tradition-oriented, and envies her sister's confidence. She lives with Mama and appreciates the family heirlooms for their everyday use.
Dee
Lighter-skinned with nicer hair and a fuller figure than Maggie. She is educated, worldly, and concerned with style and appearance. Dee is in conflict with her family over her cultural perceptions.
Aunt Dicie
Aunt Dicie, or Big Dee, was Mama's sister-in-law. She helped make the quilts that Dee wants, and she is reminisced by Mama and Maggie for her part in their lives and her contributions to their family's traditions.
Great Grandpa Ezra
Mentioned in passing, Great Grandpa Ezra's snuff box is among the heritage items Dee wishes to acquire. He is part of the family lineage that Mama cherishes.
Hakim-a-barber
Dee's boyfriend or husband, he has a short, bushy hair and wears a long robe and sandals. He is somewhat out of place in the rural setting, prides himself on his African heritage, and adheres to a somewhat superficial understanding of African culture.
Mama
Large, big-boned woman with rough, man-working hands. She is practical, down-to-earth, and takes pride in her heritage. Mama is the narrator and the mother of Dee and Maggie.
Grandma Dee
Though she never appears directly in the story, Grandma Dee is remembered as a strong and traditional figure. She made many of the family heirlooms that Dee wants to take. She represents the family's heritage and traditions.
