Stage right
To the actor's right when facing the audience; often used for entrances or exits, or to balance stage composition.
Cross
When an actor moves from one area of the stage to another; used to demonstrate a change in focus or to follow blocking.
Enter
When an actor comes onto the stage from the wings; the entrance can set the tone for the character's introduction to the scene.
Spike mark
A physical marker on the stage floor that indicates where props or set pieces should go or where actors should stand.
Stage whisper
A loud whisper intended to be heard by the audience but not the other characters onstage; used for dramatic effect or conveying secrets.
Cheat out
Positioning the body towards the audience while interacting with other characters; ensures actors are seen and heard clearly.
Blocking
The precise staging of actors in order to facilitate the performance; includes movements, positions, and stage locations.
Upstage
Away from the audience, towards the back of the stage; used to draw focus away or demonstrate physical distancing in a scene.
Exit
When an actor leaves the stage to the wings; can convey narrative progression or emotional departure.
Counter-cross
Movement in opposition to another actor's cross to maintain visual balance; ensures the stage is not left looking uneven.
Center stage
The middle of the stage area; focal point for key scenes, monologues, or when a character is the center of attention.
Stage left
To the actor's left when facing the audience; can be used to show movement or transition.
Break a leg
A traditional saying that means 'good luck' in the theatre; said to actors before they go onstage.
Downstage
Towards the audience, at the front of the stage; used to draw the audience's attention or create a sense of closeness.
Fourth wall
An imaginary wall that separates the audience from the actors; breaking it involves speaking directly to or acknowledging the audience.
