Step Heel
Placing the ball of the foot down followed by the heel to create two sounds; often part of a beginner's vocabulary.
Pullback
A movement where the feet are lifted and scraped backward on the floor to create sound before landing.
Cramproll
A move consisting of a sequence of steps that typically includes a stomp and two heel drops.
Cramp Roll
A combination of steps producing a sequence of sounds, usually starting with the toes and finishing with the heels.
Toe Tap
A contact with the floor using just the toe tap, making a single sound.
Pickup
A movement involving a hop and a swing of the foot backwards, resulting in a sound from the tap of the shoe.
Time Step
A traditional tap combination usually used to set the tempo in routines; consists of a sequence of moves that create a rhythmic pattern.
Ball Change
A quick transfer of weight from one foot to the other; a partial weight shift on the balls of both feet.
Hop
A spring into the air off of one foot and landing on the same foot; one of the most basic tap movements.
Riff
A brush of the foot on the floor followed by a scuff and a step that creates three sounds.
Maxi Ford
A tap step combining a leap, shuffle, and a ball change; named after the famous dancer Ford.
Slide
Gliding along the floor with one foot, typically without picking up the foot; can vary in direction.
Stomp
A heavy step with a flat foot that makes a loud sound; does not pick up the foot afterwards.
Heel Toe
Striking the heel downwards then the toe, or vice versa; can create different rhythms.
Scuff
A forward brush with the heel of the tap shoe; a single sound is created.
Flap
A brush followed by a step that makes two sounds; executed with a loose ankle.
Buffalo
A combination of a leap, shuffle, and a step; usually done in a continuous, flowing motion.
Shuffle
Brush the ball tap of the shoe forward, then backward; a combination of two movements.
Wing
A move where both feet brush out to the side and then back in to create multiple sounds.
Double Shuffle
Two consecutive shuffles without a connecting step in between; creates a quick succession of sounds.
