The square root of a number is a value that, when multiplied by itself, gives the original number.
Square Root
A set of non-negative whole numbers that are commonly used for counting.
Natural Numbers
The relationship between two variables where one is a constant multiple of the other.
Direct Proportion
An equation in which the highest power of the variable is squared.
Quadratic Equation
A mathematical operation where an integer is divided by another integer to produce an integer quotient and possibly a remainder.
Division
A number that is added to another number.
Addend
This kind of number can be represented as the quotient of two integers, where the denominator is not zero.
Rational Number
A symbol used in mathematics to indicate addition, such as the plus sign (+).
Additive Operator
The sum of a collection of numbers divided by the count of numbers in the collection.
Average
The largest number that divides two or more numbers without leaving a remainder.
Greatest Common Divisor
The opposites of the numbers we usually think of, which are greater than zero. This type includes both negative numbers and zero.
Non-Positive Numbers
A mathematical statement that two expressions are equal.
Equation
The perimeter of geometric figures or the total length around a path.
Circumference
The result when one number is subtracted from another.
Difference
A solid three-dimensional object where each face is a polygon, and every pair of adjacent polygons share an edge.
Polyhedron
The lowest number that is a multiple of two or more numbers.
Least Common Multiple
A mathematical notation used to represent very large or very small numbers. It is written as the product of a number between 1 and 10 and a power of 10.
Scientific Notation
An arithmetic operation that calculates the total number of objects when objects are arranged in rows and columns.
Multiplication
A special number that, when used in a multiplication problem, doesn't change the value of the other number.
Identity Element for Multiplication
A number that cannot be exactly expressed as a ratio of two integers.
Irrational Number
A mathematical symbol or group of symbols representing a quantity or an operation.
Expression
The likelihood of an event occurring, measured on a scale from 0 to 1.
Probability
The graphical representation of data where the data is represented by symbols such as bars in a chart, lines in a graph, or slices in a pie.
Data Visualization
The ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, approximately equal to 3.14159.
Pi
The point at which a graph intersects the axes of a coordinate system.
Axis Intercept
The measure of the amount of two-dimensional space inside the perimeter of a flat (2D) shape.
Area
A mathematical abstraction that deals with quantities, and their operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Number Theory
A branch of mathematics dealing with the shape, relative arrangement, and size of figures.
Geometry
A geometrical solid with six congruent square faces.
Cube
An arithmetic operation that combines two numbers to make a larger number.
Addition
A quantity with both magnitude and direction.
Vector
A mathematical statement composed of algebraic and/or numerical expressions set apart by an inequality symbol.
Inequality
A collection of elements that can be numbers, symbols, or sets that are grouped together in a prescribed order.
Sequence
The branch of mathematics that deals with quantities and the relationships between them, usually described by equations.
Algebra
A special relationship where each input has a single output. It is often written as an equation in which is an independent variable and is a dependent variable.
Function
The amount of space an object takes up.
