Planetary Rings and Moons

Flashcards
0/4
Jupiter
Jupiter's ring system is faint and consists mainly of dust particles from its moons during impacts. Notable moons include the Galilean moons: Io, which has active volcanism; Europa, which likely has a subsurface ocean; Ganymede, the largest moon in the Solar System; and Callisto.
Uranus
Uranus has a system of narrow, dark rings made of larger pieces of rock and ice. Notable moons include Titania and Oberon; Miranda is interesting due to its geological activity potentially indicating an underground ocean.
Neptune
Neptune's ring system is faint and is composed mostly of dust and ice particles which is possibly mixed with organic compounds. Its largest moon, Triton, is geologically active and has nitrogen geysers; it also orbits the planet in a retrograde orbit.
Saturn
Saturn is known for its extensive and bright ring system, made mostly of ice particles with a smaller amount of rocky debris and dust. Notable moons include Titan, the second-largest moon in the Solar System, and Enceladus, which has geysers that may indicate a subsurface ocean.
