Plate Tectonics: Types of Boundaries
3
Flashcards
0/3
Transform Plate Boundary
A boundary where two plates slide past each other horizontally. The friction between the plates can generate earthquakes, but this type of boundary does not typically produce volcanic activity or create new landforms.
Convergent Plate Boundary
A boundary where two plates move toward each other. This can result in one plate being forced beneath another in a process known as subduction, leading to the formation of mountains, volcanic activity, and deep oceanic trenches.
Divergent Plate Boundary
A boundary where two tectonic plates move away from each other. As the plates separate, magma rises to create new crust, often resulting in the formation of new oceanic ridges or continental rifts.
