Flashcards
0/15
Chaparral
Schlerophyllous shrub land with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, prone to wildfires.
Boreal Forest (Taiga)
Coniferous forest biome consisting mostly of pines, spruces, and larches.
Temperate Grassland
A biome characterized by deep, nutrient-rich soil that supports tall grasses.
Polar Ice Caps
Regions of the Earth where the temperature never rises above freezing, leading to massive permanent layers of ice.
Savanna
A mixed woodland-grassland ecosystem with sparse tree cover.
Tundra
A biome where the tree growth is hindered by low temperatures and short growing seasons.
Rainforest
Dense forest biome with high rainfall year-round, and a rich biodiversity.
Coral Reef
An underwater ecosystem characterized by reef-building corals. Reefs are formed of colonies of coral polyps held together by calcium carbonate.
Montane Forests
Forests found in mountainous areas with elevation-induced climate changes.
Alpine Tundra
This biome is similar to arctic tundra, but is located on high mountains at elevations where trees cannot grow.
Mediterranean
Characterized by dry summers and mild, wet winters. Vegetation is predominantly evergreen shrubs and small trees.
Desert
A barren area of landscape characterized by minimal rainfall causing scarcity of vegetation and life.
Temperate Forest
Consists of deciduous and evergreen species with distinct four-season cycles.
Mangrove Swamps
Tropical or subtropical marine swamps that are characterized by the abundance of mangrove trees.
Wetland
A land area that is saturated with water, either permanently or seasonally.
