Carbon Sequestration Methods

Flashcards
0/8
Biochar
Converting agricultural waste into a stable form of charcoal and burying it in the ground to enhance soil fertility and sequester carbon for potentially centuries.
Enhanced Weathering
Spreading minerals that naturally bind with carbon dioxide, such as olivine or basalt, over land or sea to speed up the natural weathering process which removes CO2 from the atmosphere.
Afforestation and Reforestation
Planting new forests on lands that have not been recently forested increases carbon uptake as trees absorb CO2 for photosynthesis.
Direct Air Capture
Using chemical reactions to remove CO2 directly from the atmosphere and store it underground or use it in industrial processes.
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
Capturing carbon dioxide emissions from power plants or other industries and transporting it to a storage site to prevent it from entering the atmosphere.
Blue Carbon
The carbon captured by the world's ocean and coastal ecosystems, mostly seagrasses, mangroves, and salt marshes, which can store carbon in their biomass and sediments for millennia.
Ocean Fertilization
Adding nutrients to the upper ocean to stimulate the growth of phytoplankton which can absorb CO2 through photosynthesis and sequester it deep in the ocean when they die and sink.
Soil Carbon Sequestration
Managing land use and agricultural practices to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil, such as through no-till farming, crop rotation, and the use of cover crops.
