Arlecchino
A witty and clever servant known for his acrobatic antics and slapstick humor. He usually wears a patchwork colorful costume and is characterized by his resourcefulness and loyalty.
Il Capitano
A boastful character claiming to be a great military leader, but is actually a coward. He has a braggart personality, an oversized ego, and is a comic figure due to his gap between pretended valor and actual timidity.
Innamorati
Typically young lovers who are besotted with each other and are the central characters around which the play's comedic plots revolve. They are beautiful, elegant, and express their emotions poetically.
Brighella
A crafty, greedy, and sometimes violent character who is often involved in schemes. He wears a white half-mask, greenish attire, and is seen as more cunning and less clownish than Arlecchino.
Scaramuccia
Also known as Scaramouche, he is a roguish adventurer and swordsman. Often portrayed as a coward despite his braggadocio, he wears a black mask and a black cloak.
Colombina
A maidservant who is often Arlecchino's love interest. She is assertive, intelligent, and practical. She typically outsmarts the men in the play and helps resolve the plot.
Pulcinella
A hunchbacked, hook-nosed, and often misanthropic character. He is a tragicomic figure, whose humor is often derived from his bitter and cynical view of life.
Pedrolino
A zanni or comic servant like Arlecchino, but is often more sad, pining, and moonstruck. He is patient, enduring and has unrequited love for Colombina, characterized by his white clothing and makeup.
Pantalone
A greedy old merchant who is often the father of one of the inamorati and a figure of authority. His traits include being miserly, lecherous, and often gullible.
Il Dottore
A pompous and self-important character pretending to have knowledge he doesn't possess. He is usually depicted as a pedantic, bloated man with a bushy mustache and speaks in a mix of Italian and Latin gibberish.
