Xibalba
Maya culture. The Maya underworld is a feared place consisting of various houses with different trials, ruled by the lords of Xibalba.
Aaru
Egyptian culture. The heavenly paradise where souls lived in peace after passing the test by Osiris. A place with plentiful food, water, and pleasures.
Sheol
Hebrew culture. The earliest concept of the underworld in Hebrew scriptures. Often referred to as a place of darkness to which all the dead go, both the righteous and the unrighteous.
Yomi
Japanese culture. The land of the dead in Shinto where the dead go, it is desolate and eternal night. Izanami, the goddess of creation and death resides here.
Duat
Egyptian culture. The underworld is where the sun god Ra travels at night and it is the realm where souls are judged by Osiris using the feather of Ma'at.
Di Yu
Chinese culture. It is a purgatory with different levels and chambers to punish the dead according to their sins, overseen by the Ten Kings of Hell.
Naraka
Hindu and Buddhist cultures. It is a place of torment and purification, not eternal damnation. The soul eventually leaves after expiating its sins.
Tartarus
Greek culture. Initially, a deep abyss used as a dungeon of torment and suffering for the wicked and as the prison for the Titans.
Hades
Greek culture. The underworld is ruled by the god Hades and is the final resting place for the deceased. It consists of various realms such as the Elysian Fields and Tartarus.
Helheim
Norse culture. It is the realm of the dead in Norse mythology, ruled by the goddess Hel. It is a cold and dreary place, distinct from Valhalla, the hall of slain warriors.
