Cupid fell for mortal Psyche, visiting her nightly in secret. When Psyche saw his divine form, Cupid left her. Desperate, Psyche completed tasks set by Venus to reunite with Cupid. Their love survived, and Psyche was granted immortality.

In Aztec mythology, Popocatepetl was a warrior who loved Iztaccihuatl, a princess. After a false report of his death, Iztaccihuatl died of grief, and upon Popocatepetl's return, he was devastated, leading to him watching over her body for eternity.
