Spit bite aquatint
This technique involves painting acid directly onto the aquatinted plate, sometimes diluted with gum arabic in varying concentrations, which allows for spontaneous and painterly marks.
Carborundum etching
A modern technique where a mixture of carborundum grit and an adhesive like PVA glue is applied to the plate to create a textured surface that holds a large volume of ink, producing rich, velvety areas of color.
Mezzotint
In mezzotint, the entire surface of a metal plate is roughened with a tool known as a rocker, creating a burr that holds ink. The artist then smooths areas to create gradients of tone from black to white.
Hard-ground etching
A technique that involves coating the etching plate with a hard, waxy ground that resists acid. The artist then draws through the ground with a sharp point, exposing the metal. The plate is then dipped in acid to etch the exposed lines.
Chine-collé
While not an etching technique per se, Chine-collé involves adhering a thin paper to a heavier support as the printing process occurs, allowing for the transfer of very fine details from the etched plate.
Drypoint
Rather than using acid, in drypoint, the artist scratches the image directly into the plate with a sharp needle. The burr raised by the needle catches extra ink to create soft, velvety lines.
Sugar lift aquatint
An artist paints a design with a sugar solution on a plate, coats it with aquatint, then submerges it in warm water. The sugar lifts off, revealing the design which is then etched.
Engraving
Engraving involves cutting or incising a design into a metal plate with a sharp tool called a burin. The incised lines can vary in width and depth to create a range of tones.
Aquatint
Aquatint employs a powdered resin that is dusted on the plate and then heated to form a ground that can be etched in acid. This technique allows for the creation of tonal effects similar to watercolor.
Soft-ground etching
This technique uses a softer waxy ground that is sensitive to texture. Paper or fabric can be pressed into the ground, and when removed, exposes the metal in a textured pattern. The plate is then etched with acid.
Photo-etching
A photographic image is transferred to a metal plate using photo-sensitive resist. The plate is then developed and the image areas are etched with acid, while the non-image areas are protected by the resist.
Collagraphy
Collagraphy involves building up a collage of materials on a plate, which is then sealed, inked, and pressed onto paper. The varied materials create different textures and depths in the final print.
