The Layers of the Sun
6
Flashcards
0/6
Photosphere
The visible 'surface' of the sun where light is emitted and sunspots can be observed, considered the layer from which sunlight is radiated.
Radiative Zone
A layer where energy is transferred outward by the radiation of photons, which can take a very long time due to the 'random walk' of photons.
Chromosphere
Above the photosphere, characterized by a reddish glow as seen during a solar eclipse, with spicules and flares stemming from this layer.
Corona
The sun's outer atmosphere, distinguished by its hot, ionized gases that extend millions of kilometers into space, observable during a total solar eclipse.
Convective Zone
The outermost layer of the sun's interior where energy is transferred by convection currents, causing the solar material to circulate.
Core
The innermost layer of the sun where nuclear fusion occurs, producing vast amounts of energy.
