Downstream Signal
In cable TV systems, signals sent from the headend or distribution facility to the subscribers' homes are known as downstream. This includes TV channels, internet data, VoD, etc.
Set-Top Box
A device that converts incoming cable TV signals from the cable provider into a format that can be displayed on a television screen.
Video on Demand (VoD)
A service offered by cable providers that allows users to select and watch video content at their convenience, with the ability to pause, rewind, and fast-forward.
Premium Channels
Television channels that offer programming without commercial interruption, available to cable subscribers for an additional fee over and above the basic service tier.
Cable Modulation
The process of varying a carrier signal to create a modulated signal for transmission over a cable system, often using methods like QAM for digital signals.
Headend
The control center for a cable TV system where incoming signals are received, processed, and delivered to the distribution network.
Bandwidth Allocation
The process of distributing the available frequency spectrum among various services like TV channels, internet, and phone services within a cable system.
Node
In cable operations, a node is a local network point that serves as a redistribution point for cable signals, often where optical signals are converted to electrical signals for distribution.
Coaxial Cable
A type of electrical cable consisting of an inner conductor, an insulating layer, a metallic shield, and an outer insulating layer, used widely to transmit cable TV signals.
Pay-Per-View (PPV)
A system where cable subscribers can purchase events to view via private telecast, where charges are added to their cable bill for each event they order.
Digital Signal Transmission
The transmission method where video, audio and data signals are encoded into a digital format and transmitted over cable, providing a higher quality signal than analog.
HFC Network
Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial network, a telecommunication industry term for a broadband network that combines optical fiber and coaxial cable.
Fiber Optic Transmission
A method of transmitting data as pulses of light through a thin glass fiber, allowing for higher bandwidths and longer transmission distances with less signal degradation.
Cable Internet Access
High-speed internet service that uses the same infrastructure as cable TV to provide broadband internet connections to consumers.
Encryption
The process of encoding TV signals to prevent unauthorized access to content. Encrypted signals require a proper decoder typically provided by the cable operator.
CableCARD
A removable card provided by the cable company that allows the decryption of digital TV channels without the need for a full set-top box.
Upstream Signal
In cable TV systems, signals sent from the subscribers' homes back to the cable headend or distribution network are known as upstream, such as internet requests or interactive TV commands.
Analog Signal Transmission
The transmission of video and audio signals using analog technology, where signals are carried over cable using varying frequency and amplitude.
Basic Tier
The base package of cable TV channels offered by a cable provider, which typically includes local broadcast stations and a few additional channels.
Multiplexing
A method used to combine multiple digital or analog signals into one signal over a shared medium such as cable. Common methods include TDM and FDM.
