Cloud Disaster Recovery

Flashcards
0/20
RPO (Recovery Point Objective)
The maximum targeted period in which data might be lost from an IT service due to a major incident. Strategies include frequent backups and real-time replication.
Failback
The process of restoring operations to the primary system or original state after a failover. Strategies include careful monitoring and tested procedures for reversing failover.
Warm Site
An equipped data center that does not have customer data preloaded, but is available to receive data and begin operation within a few hours. Strategies include periodic updates and rehearsed transition processes.
Asynchronous Replication
Data replication occurs with a delay, meaning the backup copy is slightly behind the primary data. Strategy includes using it where some data lag can be tolerated to improve performance.
Incident Response Plan
A documented, structured approach for handling potential disruptive events. Strategy includes well-defined steps for detection, communication, containment, and resolution.
Incremental Backup
A type of backup that only copies the data that has changed since the last backup. Strategy includes using it in combination with full backups to minimize data loss and speed up recovery.
Cloud Service Provider Redundancy
The use of multiple cloud service providers to mitigate the risk of a single point of failure. Strategy includes diversifying providers and having interoperable cloud services.
Data Center Tiering
Classification system for data centers based on redundancy and fault tolerance. Tiers range from I (least redundant) to IV (fully redundant). Strategy is to choose the appropriate tier for business needs.
BCP (Business Continuity Planning)
A holistic management process that identifies potential threats to an organization and the impacts to business operations. Strategies include regular revisions and training exercises.
Cold Site
A facility that has all the required physical amenities but does not have the technology systems in place. Strategy includes keeping hardware agreements and quick installation processes.
Full Backup
A complete copy of an organization's data files and programs. Strategy includes performing these periodically to ensure a complete restore point.
Hot Site
A fully operational offsite data center with hardware and software, staff and customer data, ready to be used at a moment’s notice. Strategy is maintaining duplicate systems that are always running parallel to the primary site.
Failover
A procedure by which a system automatically transfers control to a duplicate backup system when it detects a failure. Strategies include using replication and load balancers.
Replication
The act of copying and maintaining database objects, data files etc. in more than one location. Strategies include real-time data replication and asynchronous/synchronous replication.
RTO (Recovery Time Objective)
The targeted duration of time within which a business process must be restored after a disaster to avoid unacceptable consequences. Strategies include having redundant systems and automated failover.
Synchronous Replication
A method of data replication where the data is written to both the primary and the backup location simultaneously. Strategy includes using it in systems requiring high availability and zero data loss.
MTD (Maximum Tolerable Downtime)
The longest period of time that a system can be down after a disaster without causing irreparable damage to the business. Strategies to reduce MTD include proactive planning and having resilient systems.
DRaaS (Disaster Recovery as a Service)
Third-party cloud service that allows organizations to failover their physical or virtual servers to a cloud computing environment. Strategies include selecting a reliable DRaaS provider and ensuring proper setup.
Business Impact Analysis (BIA)
A process that predicts the consequences of disruption of a business function and process and gathers information needed to develop recovery strategies. Critical to BCP.
Continuous Data Protection (CDP)
A method that continuously captures and stores data changes. Strategy includes using it in systems where any data loss is unacceptable and immediate recovery is a must.
