Atlantic Cod
Stocks are overfished. Pacific cod from Alaska is a better alternative.
Scallops
Wild-caught can be sustainable, particularly when dive-caught. Farmed scallops are also a good choice.
Tilapia (Farmed)
Sustainable when farmed in closed containment systems. Avoid those from China due to poor practices.
European Sea Bass
Wild populations are overfished. Farmed sea bass can be a better choice if from sustainable sources.
Chilean Seabass (Toothfish)
Overfished, opt for Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified products.
Swordfish
Often overfished. Choose harpoon- or pole-caught options from North Atlantic or Pacific.
Mahi Mahi (Imported)
Fishing methods can be destructive. US and Ecuadorian longline-caught are better options.
Orange Roughy
Deep-sea fish with very long lifespans, making it highly vulnerable to overfishing. Best to avoid.
Red Snapper
Overfished, especially in the Gulf of Mexico. Seek out sustainable sources or alternatives like Vermilion snapper.
Atlantic Salmon (Farmed)
Varies by farming method. Open-net pens can be harmful. Closed containment systems are preferable.
Grouper
Some species are overfished. Red grouper from the Gulf of Mexico is a more sustainable option.
Shrimp (Imported, Farmed)
Often farmed with practices that harm the environment. US or Canadian farmed or wild-caught are better.
King Crab (Imported)
Russian king crab is often illegally caught. Alaskan king crab is a sustainable alternative.
Eel (Unagi)
Populations are declining. Seek out sustainably farmed options if available.
Bluefin Tuna
Critically endangered due to overfishing. Avoid or choose pole-and-line caught skipjack or albacore.
