Divergent's society
A post-apocalyptic society in Chicago divided into five factions based on human virtues. Each faction performs a role for the society, which is supposed to reduce the potential for conflict but instead leads to a rigid and controlled life.
The Capitol (The Handmaid's Tale)
A theocratic dictatorship formed after a staged terrorist attack. Fertility rates plummet, leading to the subjugation of women, with 'handmaids' assigned to bear children for the ruling elite.
Panem (The Hunger Games)
A society structured into a wealthy Capitol and twelve poorer districts. The Capitol exerts control through the annual Hunger Games, where each district must send two tributes to fight to the death.
The City (City of Ember)
An underground city designed to house survivors of an apocalyptic event for a fixed period. The city eventually falls into decay and resource scarcity, with the knowledge of the surface world lost to its citizens.
Bregna (Aeon Flux)
A walled city-state that remains after a virus decimates the world's population, ruled by a congress of scientists. This society is marked by surveillance, manipulation of nature, and a mysterious disease affecting pregnancy.
The World State (Brave New World)
A society with a caste system created via genetic manipulation and conditioning. Citizens are kept in line through societal norms, the use of a drug called 'soma', and recreational sex. Individuality and personal relationships are considered taboo.
Oceania (1984)
A totalitarian state controlled by the Party, led by Big Brother, where independent thinking is deemed 'thoughtcrime'. The society is under constant surveillance, and public mind control is enacted through 'Newspeak'.
Neo Seoul (Cloud Atlas)
A futuristic Korean city with a strict class system, where 'fabricants' (genetically engineered humans) serve the consumerist lifestyle of pureblood humans, until a fabricant revolution is sparked.
Fahrenheit 451's society
An American society where books are banned and 'firemen' are employed to burn any that are found. Television is the primary medium for communication and thought is discouraged.
The society of Ready Player One
Set in a near-future dystopian Earth suffering from an energy crisis. Most of humanity uses the virtual reality software OASIS to escape from the decayed reality and to socialize, work, and attend school.
The Society (The Giver)
A community governed by strict rules and roles, where emotions and memories are suppressed via medication. Designated 'Receivers' hold community memories to guide societal decision-making.
The Unwind Society (Unwind)
A society following a civil war over reproductive rights, where parents can choose to 'unwind' their children, a process where the teens' body parts are harvested for others.
