Essential Electronic Music Effects

Flashcards
0/20
Limiter
A compressor with a very high ratio, used to prevent a signal's amplitude from exceeding a certain level, ensuring no clipping occurs.
Chorus
Simulates the effect of multiple instruments playing the same part together. It thickens the sound by duplicating the signal, delay it slightly, and modulates the delay time.
Stereo Widener
Enhances the stereo effect by manipulating the differences between left and right audio channels, used to create a sense of spaciousness.
Tape Stop
Simulates the effect of a tape player being stopped, causing the sound to slow down and pitch to drop. Used in electronic music for transitions and dramatic effects.
Delay
Echo effect that repeats a sound after a short period of time. It can be used to create a rhythmic pattern or to fill out the space in a mix.
Equalization (EQ)
Adjusts the balance of frequency components in a sound signal, used extensively to shape the tonal balance and remove unwanted frequencies.
Compression
Reduces the dynamic range of a signal by attenuating its volume when it passes a certain threshold, used for controlling levels and maintaining consistent volume.
Auto-Tune
Corrects the pitch of a vocal or instrument to the closest true semitone. It can be used subtly for pitch correction or prominently as an effect.
Distortion
Alters the sound by adding harmonics, changing the waveform and creating a 'gritty' or 'dirty' texture, commonly used in electronic genres for its aggressive tone.
Flanger
Creates a swirling effect by mixing a signal with a delayed copy of itself, where the delay time is continuously varied, commonly used to add a psychedelic sense to sounds.
Phaser
Creates a sweeping effect by filtering the signal and combining it with the original. The peaks and troughs of the resultant frequency spectrum are modulated to vary over time.
Bitcrusher
Reduces the bit depth and or sample rate of a signal, creating a lo-fi, 'digital' distortion, often used to make sounds appear retro or 'old-school'.
Ring Modulator
Multiplies two audio signals, where one signal modulates the frequency of the other, resulting in complex sounds, often used to create bell-like or metallic effects.
Sidechain Compression
A type of compression where the gain reduction is triggered by an external source. Commonly used in dance music to create a 'pumping' effect.
Vocoder
Combines the characteristic elements of one sound with the pitch of another, creating a robotic voice effect, commonly used to blend human voices with synthesizers.
Wah-Wah
Sweeps the peak response of a filter up and down in frequency, creating a 'wah' sound, used primarily with electric guitar but also in electronic music.
Exciter
Enhances the high frequency content of sounds by adding harmonic distortion, used to brighten up tracks or make them more present.
Reverb
Creates the perception of space, adding depth and dimension to sounds, commonly used to emulate the acoustic characteristics of different environments.
Tremolo
Modulates the amplitude of a signal at a steady rate, creating a wavering effect, commonly used to add a shimmering character to guitars, keys, and pads.
Gate
Controls the volume of a signal by cutting it off (gating) when it drops below a set threshold, used for noise reduction or creative effects.
