Disassembling the Clarinet
1. Carefully separate the bell from the lower joint. 2. Disconnect the lower joint from the upper joint. 3. Remove the barrel from the upper joint. 4. Take off the ligature and reed from the mouthpiece.
Cleaning the Mouthpiece
1. Remove reed and ligature from mouthpiece. 2. Use a mouthpiece brush with mild soap and warm water to scrub the inside. 3. Rinse thoroughly with cold water. 4. Dry the mouthpiece with a soft cloth.
Replacing the Reed
1. Loosen the ligature on the mouthpiece. 2. Remove the old reed. 3. Soak the new reed in water for a few minutes. 4. Place the new reed on the mouthpiece and secure with the ligature.
Adjusting Clarinet Keys
1. Identify the sticky or misaligned key. 2. Gently bend the key back to the correct position using a specialized key bending tool. 3. Test the action of the key to ensure it functions properly.
Swabbing the Clarinet
1. Detach the pieces of the clarinet. 2. Use a weighted swab or cleaning cloth attached to a string and pull through each part. 3. Ensure you swab the mouthpiece, barrel, upper joint, lower joint, and bell.
Greasing Cork Joints
1. Take a small amount of cork grease on your finger. 2. Apply it gently to the corked areas of the clarinet joints. 3. Avoid getting grease on the body of the instrument or the pads.
Replacing Clarinet Pads
1. Remove the key with the worn pad. 2. Take out the old pad and clean the tone hole and key cup. 3. Install the new pad and ensure it seals the tone hole completely when the key is closed.
Polishing the Clarinet
1. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe down the body of the clarinet. 2. For silver-plated keys, use a silver polishing cloth. 3. Avoid using liquid polish and do not get polish on the pads.
Assembling the Clarinet
1. Secure the reed on the mouthpiece with a ligature. 2. Attach the barrel to the mouthpiece. 3. Connect the upper joint to the barrel. 4. Attach the lower joint to the upper joint, ensuring proper alignment of the bridge mechanism. 5. Add the bell to the lower joint.
Clarinet Spring Adjustment
1. Locate the spring needing adjustment. 2. Use spring hook or needle-nose pliers to carefully adjust the tension. 3. Ensure the key action is responsive but not too tight.
