The Double Lift
Purpose: To secretly pick up two cards as one, often to set up a reveal or switch later on. Timing: Used when showing a card to the audience, before a key reveal.
The Top Change
Purpose: To exchange one card on the top of the deck with a card in hand. Timing: Executed in the moment of audience distraction, usually during a natural action like gesturing or misdirecting.
The Elmsley Count
Purpose: Counting cards in a way that hides one or more cards in the packet. Timing: Used during a trick to conceal a set-up or surprise ending, often in a card reveal sequence.
The French Drop
Purpose: To create the illusion of vanishing an object, typically a coin or small ball. Timing: Performed when the hand appears to grasp the object, but it is secretly retained in the original hand.
The Levitation Gesture
Purpose: To create the illusion of an object or person levitating. Timing: Executed when the magician's hands frame the levitating object, focusing the audience's attention.
The Vanishing Silk
Purpose: To make a silk scarf or handkerchief disappear. Timing: Performed when the magician pretends to stuff the silk into a fist, using a gimmick to conceal it.
The Linking Rings Gesture
Purpose: To illustrate the connection of separate solid metal rings. Timing: Performed at the climax of the illusion when the rings appear to link or unlink.
The Thumb Tip
Purpose: A gimmick used to conceal small objects, creating the appearance of vanishing or producing an item. Timing: Used throughout a routine when objects need to be secretly palmed or revealed.
The Pass
Purpose: To secretly move a selected card from the middle to the top of the deck. Timing: Done when the audience believes the deck is being cut fairly.
The D'Lite Thumb
Purpose: To create the illusion of catching light or a small glowing object. Timing: Used when the magician moves the hand near light sources or objects, seemingly plucking light out of thin air.
The Cups and Balls Moves
Purpose: To secretly manipulate small balls under cups, for vanishes or appearances. Timing: Each move is timed with the lifting and replacing of cups to create illusions of movement.
The Coin Roll
Purpose: To display dexterity and misdirect while rolling a coin across the knuckles. Timing: Often used as a lead-up to coin vanish or production effects.
The Retention Vanish
Purpose: To make an object, like a coin, appear to be placed in the other hand but is actually retained. Timing: Done when the audience's attention is focused on the supposed location of the object.
The Ambitious Card Routine Gesture
Purpose: To reinforce the idea that a selected card continually rises to the top of the deck. Timing: Paired with card moves throughout the routine for emphasis and misdirection.
The Card Fan
Purpose: To aesthetically display the cards and sometimes to hide or control selected cards. Timing: Created when presenting the deck or when a selection or reveal is required.
The Snap Change
Purpose: Quickly changing one card for another in a snapping motion. Timing: Executed during a visual change, creating a surprising and instant transformation.
The Wand Spin
Purpose: To create a magical flourish with a wand, emphasizing the magician's control over objects. Timing: Performed typically before or after a magical effect to accentuate the magical moment.
The Invisible Palm
Purpose: To create the illusion that a palmed card is completely invisible. Timing: Performed when showing an empty hand before revealing the card.
The False Cut
Purpose: To give the impression of cutting the deck without changing the order of the cards. Timing: Used when the magician wants to maintain a card or set-up while apparently shuffling.
The Classic Palm
Purpose: To secretly hold an object such as a coin in the hand while it appears empty. Timing: Used when the magician needs to pretend to transfer the object to the other hand or make it disappear.
