Family ISA
The Family ISA refers to the way the institution of the family indoctrinates individuals with societal norms, values, and beliefs, contributing to the reproduction of the existing class structure and capitalist relations of production.
Cultural ISA
Cultural ISA refers to the way in which culture, through practices, rituals, and shared narratives, transmits and reinforces the ruling ideology, contributing to the existing social order's reproduction, similar to the function of communication and artistic ISAs.
Educational ISA
This ISA is focused on schools and educational systems that instill dominant ideologies into individuals, contributing to the perpetuation of capitalist production relations by reproducing class structures.
Legal ISA
The Legal ISA constitutes the laws, regulations, and the justice system, which encode the dominant ideology and serve to reproduce the existing social order, legitimizing the Repressive State Apparatus.
Political ISA
This apparatus includes political parties, campaigns, and elections, which serve to disseminate the ruling ideology and reinforce the illusion of democracy within the framework of class inequalities.
Repressive State Apparatus (RSA)
The RSA refers to institutions such as the government, police, courts, and prison system which function predominantly through repression, including physical force, to maintain the power of the ruling class.
Ideological State Apparatus (ISA)
The ISA encompasses private and public institutions that work towards maintaining the conditions for the reproduction of the relations of production primarily through ideology, including schools, churches, family, legal institutions, and media.
Religious ISA
Considered the historical precursor to other ISAs, the Religious ISA utilizes institutions such as churches, mosques, synagogues, and other places of worship to propagate ideologies and reinforce social norms in line with ruling class ideologies.
Communication ISA
Comprising of the media, the press, literature, and cultural forms, the Communication ISA disseminates and reproduces the dominant ideology through mass communication tools and cultural products.
Artistic ISA
This ISA involves institutions related to the production, distribution, and consumption of art and cultural works, which serve to reflect and often reinforce the dominant ideology through creative expression.
