Life Script
A life script is a set of unconscious patterns and plans for life that were learned in childhood and are replayed in adulthood, affecting personal identity and interactions. These scripts can enhance or limit personal growth and behavior.
Ego States
Ego states are consistent patterns of feeling and experience directly related to a corresponding consistent pattern of behavior. In transactional analysis, there are three ego states: Parent, Adult, and Child, each of which influences communication and relationships.
Transactions
Transactions are the unit of social interchange in transactional analysis. A transaction occurs when an individual engages with another person's ego state. Transactional responses can be Complementary, Crossed, or Ulterior, each with different implications for the interaction.
Strokes
In transactional analysis, strokes refer to units of interpersonal recognition. A stroke can be positive or negative and is a fundamental element in human interactions as they satisfy the inherent need for recognition and stimulation.
Games
Psychological games in transactional analysis are repetitive and manipulative interactions that are played by people to achieve ulterior motives without addressing needs directly. They can severely affect relationships as they often lead to negative outcomes.
Rackets
Rackets are the repetitive expression of feelings that were discouraged or repressed in childhood. Individuals may develop a 'racket' as a substitute for authentic feelings, which can hinder emotional development and authenticity in relationships.
Autonomy
In transactional analysis, autonomy is the capacity to be aware, spontaneous, and able to respond to the here and now. It means breaking free from life scripts and becoming responsible for one's own life, leading to healthier interactions and personal satisfaction.
Psychological Positioning
Psychological positioning, or life positions, are beliefs about oneself and others formed early in life that determine how individuals interact with one another. The four life positions ('I'm OK, You're OK', etc.) shape the nature of transactions and relationships.
