Botanical Insecticides
These are insecticides derived from plants. Examples include pyrethrin from chrysanthemums and azadirachtin from neem trees, which are known to control a variety of insect pests.
Allelopathy
A phenomenon where certain plants release chemicals into the environment that inhibit the growth or development of other plant species or pests. For example, the release of juglone by walnut trees suppresses the growth of certain competing plant species.
Cultural Control
A pest control strategy that involves altering the farming environment to reduce pest populations. Examples include crop rotation, sanitation, and the proper timing of planting and harvesting.
Physical Control
This control method involves using physical means to remove or block pests from accessing plants. Examples include handpicking, barriers, traps, and mulches.
Chemical Control
The use of synthetic pesticides to reduce or eliminate pest populations. While effective, they are often used as a last resort due to potential environmental and health risks. Examples include herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
A comprehensive approach that integrates multiple practices for sustainable pest control. It includes the use of biological, cultural, physical, and chemical methods with a focus on long-term prevention and minimal impact on the ecosystem.
Genetic Control
This method involves altering the genetics of pests or crops to control pest populations. Examples include genetically modified crops that are resistant to specific pests or the release of sterile males to reduce pest populations.
Biological Control
A method of controlling pests using other living organisms. It involves the introduction of natural enemies like predators, parasites, or pathogens to control pest populations.
