Bluetongue
A viral disease spread by biting midges, affects ruminants, especially sheep. Symptoms include high fever, swelling, and ulcers. Controlled by vector control, movement restrictions, and vaccination.
Bovine Tuberculosis
A chronic bacterial disease, caused by Mycobacterium bovis, that affects cattle and can spread to humans. Symptoms include persistent cough, weight loss, and weakness. Management strategies include testing and slaughtering infected animals, movement control, and wildlife reservoir management.
Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS)
A viral disease in pigs that causes reproductive failure in breeding stock and respiratory tract illness in young pigs. Management includes biosecurity, controlled exposure of gilts, vaccination, and herd management strategies.
Avian Influenza
Also known as 'bird flu', is a viral infection that can infect not only birds, but also humans and other animals. Symptoms in birds include coughing, sneezing, respiratory distress, and sudden death. Management involves biosecurity measures, culling, vaccination, and monitoring bird populations.
Newcastle Disease
A viral disease of birds that affects the respiratory, nervous, and digestive systems. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, drooping wings, and greenish diarrhea. Managed by vaccination and maintaining strict biosecurity.
Foot and Mouth Disease
A highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals. Symptoms include fever, blisters in the mouth and on the feet, drooling, lameness, and weight loss. Management includes vaccination, movement control, culling of infected animals, and sanitary measures.
Brucellosis
An infectious bacterial disease that causes abortion in livestock and flu-like symptoms in humans. It is managed by vaccination, testing and slaughtering, movement restrictions, and public health education.
African Swine Fever
A highly contagious viral disease affecting pigs with high mortality rates. Symptoms include high fever, weakness, and hemorrhages. There is no vaccine; thus, control measures include strict quarantine, culling of infected and exposed animals, and stringent biosecurity.
Scrapie
A fatal degenerative disease affecting the nervous systems of sheep and goats. Symptoms include itching, behavioral changes, and lack of coordination. Managed by selective breeding programs and culling of affected animals.
