Soil Erosion Control

Flashcards

Cover Crops
Cover crops are plants grown to cover the soil rather than for harvest. They protect the soil from erosion by providing ground cover that reduces runoff and the impact of raindrops on the soil.
Grassed Waterways
Grassed waterways are natural or constructed channels that are shaped and graded to form a flowing pathway covered with grass. They help to transport water gently across farmland without causing soil erosion.
Mulching
Mulching involves applying a layer of material on the soil surface to conserve moisture, improve soil fertility, and reduce erosion. The mulch absorbs the energy of falling rain and helps to keep the soil in place.
Windbreaks
Windbreaks are barriers of trees or shrubs planted to protect agricultural land from the wind. They help in reducing wind erosion by blocking the wind's strength and reducing its ability to blow soil particles away.
Terracing
Terracing is the creation of flat areas on sloped land to prevent runoff and soil erosion. Each terrace slows down the flow of water and allows for more water to be absorbed into the soil rather than washing it away.
Contour Plowing
Contour plowing involves plowing along the contours of the land, rather than up and down slopes. This method creates natural barriers for water flow, reducing runoff and preventing the washing away of soil.
Crop Rotation
Crop rotation involves altering the types of crops grown in an area from season to season. This practice improves soil structure and fertility, thereby making the soil more resistant to erosion.
