Overspray
Overspray is the spray paint that goes beyond the bounds of the stencil onto the unintended areas of the surface.
Negative Space
In stencil art, negative space is the area around and between the subjects of an image which are left open, allowing the paint to pass through to the surface.
Spray Paint
A type of paint that comes in a sealed pressurized container and is released in a fine spray mist when depressing a valve button.
Banksy
Pseudonymous England-based street artist known for his distinctive stencil technique and socially and politically-themed works.
Stencil
A thin sheet of material with a design cut out, used to produce the design on an underlying surface by applying pigment through the cut-out holes.
Positive Space
In stencil art, positive space refers to the areas where the stencil blocks the paint from reaching the surface, creating the solid shapes of the design.
Bridge
A bridge is a small, uncut section of a stencil that keeps an island in place, preventing it from falling out.
Bleeding
Bleeding occurs when paint seeps under the edges of the stencil, creating a smudged effect instead of a crisp line.
Registration Mark
A mark that helps in aligning the layers of multilayered stencils accurately to ensure the different colors and parts of a stencil design line up correctly.
Myler
A durable plastic sheet that is used for making stencils which can be reused multiple times.
Island
In stencil art, an island is a part of the stencil that is not connected to the main design and requires bridges or additional support to stay in position.
Layering
Layering in stencil art involves using multiple stencils on top of one another to achieve more complex, detailed, and colorful images.
