Throw-up
A form of graffiti that is quick to paint, usually consisting of bubble letters or simple styles and limited color use. Example: The artist's tag was transformed into a silver and black throw-up on the railway bridge.
Tag
The most basic form of graffiti, a stylized signature. Example: Amongst the graffiti throw-ups there was a simple white tag spelling out 'ACE'.
Fill-In
The act of filling in the outlines of letters with color when creating graffiti. Example: The throw-up stood out with its vibrant purple fill-in against the grey wall.
Caps
Nozzles that control the width and spray pattern of the paint from a can. Example: Using fat caps, the graffiti artist was able to create large, bold lines for their throw-up.
Outline
The defining lines around the shapes of letters or images in graffiti. Example: The dark outline around the silver throw-up made the letters pop out from the red background.
Blockbuster
Large, block-lettered graffiti designed to cover a large space quickly, often with a throw-up approach. Example: A massive blockbuster throw-up covered the entire side of the abandoned warehouse.
Heaven Spot
A graffiti spot that is high up and difficult to reach, prized for its visibility and the skill required to paint it. Example: The most daring artists competed to throw-up their names on the coveted heaven spot atop the city's tallest building.
Bubble Letters
A style of writing where the letters are created in a rounded, bubble-like shape, commonly used in throw-ups. Example: The throw-up on the side of the train was quickly executed in pink bubble letters.
Legal Wall
A wall designated by authorities where graffiti artists can paint without fear of legal repercussions. Example: The legal wall at the park became a showcase of the local throw-up talent.
Crew
A group of graffiti artists who work together and share a common name or initials. Example: The city's tunnels were dominated by throw-ups from the notorious 'MSK' crew.
Wildstyle
A complicated and intricate form of graffiti, known for interlocking letters and complex designs. Example: Though the area was dominated by throw-ups, one wall featured an elaborate wildstyle mural.
Piece
Short for 'masterpiece,' a complex and detailed work of graffiti art, more elaborate than a throw-up. Example: The artist spent several nights turning his simple throw-up into a full-color piece.
