Flashcards
0/10
Irregular Galaxy
No defined shape; mix of old and new stars; often rich in gas and dust; examples include Large Magellanic Cloud, Small Magellanic Cloud.
Elliptical Galaxy
Range from nearly spherical to elongated; primarily old stars; very little interstellar matter; examples include M87, M49.
Starburst Galaxy
Intense rate of star formation; can result from interaction with another galaxy; examples include M82, NGC 4038/NGC 4039 (The Antennae Galaxies).
Lenticular Galaxy
Disk-like but without significant spiral structure; intermediate form between spiral and elliptical; examples include M85, NGC 2784.
Ring Galaxy
Galaxy with a ring-like appearance; resulting from collisions; examples include Hoag's Object, the Cartwheel Galaxy.
Dwarf Galaxy
Small galaxies composed of up to several billion stars; examples include the Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy, Fornax Dwarf.
Galaxy Cluster
Group of galaxies held together by gravity; can contain thousands of galaxies; examples include the Virgo Cluster, the Coma Cluster.
Seyfert Galaxy
Type of active galactic nucleus; bright central region; strong emissions from the center; examples include Messier 77 (M77), NGC 4151.
Barred Spiral Galaxy
Central bar-shaped structure composed of stars; spiral arms extend from ends of bar; examples include NGC 1300, Milky Way.
Spiral Galaxy
Flat, rotating disk with spiral arms, central bulge and halo; young and old stars; examples include Milky Way, Andromeda.
