Flashcards
0/10
Feature: Event Horizon
Definition: The boundary around a black hole beyond which no light or other radiation can escape. Notable instance: The Event Horizon Telescope project captured an image of M87's black hole event horizon.
Feature: Hawking Radiation
Definition: Theoretical radiation predicted by Stephen Hawking, which would be emitted by black holes due to quantum effects near the event horizon. Notable Instance: This radiation has not yet been observed and remains theoretical.
Classification by Size: Stellar Black Holes
Definition: Black holes that form from the gravitational collapse of massive stars, typically ranging from about 5 to a few tens of solar masses. Notable Instance: Cygnus X-1, one of the first suspected black holes.
Feature: Black Hole Binary
Definition: A system in which a black hole orbits another object, which could be a star, another black hole, or any other massive object. Notable Instance: GW150914, the first gravitational wave signal detected, from two merging black holes.
Classification by Size: Supermassive Black Holes
Definition: The largest type of black holes, found at the centers of most large galaxies, including the Milky Way. They can have masses equivalent to millions or even billions of solar masses. Notable Instance: Sagittarius A* at the center of the Milky Way.
Classification by Size: Intermediate Black Holes
Definition: Mysterious type of black holes with masses in the range of 100 to one million solar masses. Notable Instance: There is no confirmed detection yet, although HLX-1 is a potential candidate.
Feature: Accretion Disk
Definition: The disk of gas, dust, and other materials that spiral into a black hole. Notable Instance: Accretion disk around the black hole in the galaxy NGC 4261.
Feature: Singularity
Definition: The point at the center of a black hole where density and gravity become infinite, and spacetime curves infinitely. Notable Instance: Theoretical concept, not yet observed.
Classification by Location: Galactic Black Holes
Definition: Black holes that reside within galaxies, including both stellar and supermassive types. Notable Instance: Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way.
Feature: Photon Sphere
Definition: A hypothetical surface of a black hole where gravity is strong enough that photons are forced to travel in orbits. Notable Instance: Theoretical concept, it has not been observed directly.
