Proscenium Arch
The frame that separates the stage from the auditorium, often arched in shape.
Apron
The area of the stage in front of the proscenium arch, extending into the audience.
Fly Loft
The area above the stage where scenery, drops, and lights can be suspended out of the audience's view.
Wings
The offstage areas to the sides of the acting area, used for actors' entrances and exits, and storage of props.
Cyclorama
A large curtain or wall, often curved, at the back of the stage used to create the illusion of the sky or other backgrounds.
Gridiron
A network of horizontal steel beams above the stage, used to mount lighting fixtures and aid in flying scenery.
Orchestra Pit
The area between the stage and the audience, typically at a lower elevation, where musicians perform.
Trap Room
An area beneath the stage used for special effects such as an actor's sudden appearance or disappearance.
Green Room
A lounge or waiting area for performers to relax before or after their performance, not typically seen by the audience.
House
The area within the theater where the audience sits to watch the performance.
Scrim
A piece of fabric used in the background that appears opaque when lit from the front and translucent when lit from behind.
Stage Left/Right
Respective sides of the stage from the actor's perspective, facing the audience.
Backstage
The areas of the theater not visible to the audience, used by performers and crew during a performance.
Control Booth
A room or area in the theater from which lighting, sound, and other technical aspects are controlled.
Main Drape
The main curtain that conceals the stage from the audience before the show starts and during intermissions.
Thrust Stage
A stage that extends into the audience on three sides and is connected to the backstage area.
Lighting Grid
A series of interconnected pipes where lighting fixtures are hung, covering the performance space.
Prompt Corner
The area, usually located stage left, where the stage manager and other technicians control the show.
Dressing Rooms
Rooms where performers get into costume, apply makeup, and prepare for their performance.
Catwalk
A narrow walkway suspended above the stage or the audience, used by technicians to access lighting and other equipment.
