Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Agriculture
4
Flashcards
0/4
Fluorinated gases
Less common in agriculture but can be released from refrigeration and air conditioning systems used in food storage. Reduction strategies include proper maintenance, leak prevention, and use of alternative refrigerants with lower global warming potential.
Carbon dioxide (CO2)
Sources include burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and soil erosion. Reduction strategies involve improving energy efficiency, adopting conservation tillage, and increasing carbon sequestration through agroforestry.
Methane (CH4)
Sources are enteric fermentation in livestock, rice paddies, and anaerobic decomposition of organic matter. Reduction can be achieved through diet optimization in livestock, improved rice cultivation practices, and capturing biogas from manure.
Nitrous oxide (N2O)
Produced mainly from soil microbial processes, related to the use of nitrogen fertilizers. Strategies include using nitrification inhibitors, precision farming to optimize fertilizer use, and planting nitrogen-fixing crops.
