Violin Bow
A slender stick with hair stretched between its ends, used to produce sound from the strings.
F-holes
The openings on the top plate of the violin that allow sound to project from the body of the instrument.
Fine Tuners
Small screws situated on the tailpiece that allow the player to make precise adjustments to the pitch of each string.
Scroll
The ornamental carving found at the top of the violin, above the pegbox, that doesn't have an acoustic function but is a distinguishing feature of the instrument.
Pegbox
The part of the violin where the tuning pegs are inserted, allowing for the adjustment of string tension and thus tuning of the instrument.
Tuning Pegs
Wooden pegs that fit into the pegbox which, when turned, change the tension of the strings to tune the instrument.
Strings
Thin chords made from gut, steel, or synthetic material that vibrate when played with a bow or fingers to produce sound.
Tailpiece
The wooden or plastic piece at the base of the violin to which the strings are attached at one end.
Chin Rest
A small piece of wood or plastic mounted on the base of the violin for comfort and to help position the violin against the jaw or chin.
Bridge
A wooden piece that supports the strings and transmits their vibrations to the body of the violin to create sound.
Fingerboard
The long black piece of wood that runs down the middle of the neck where the player presses down the strings to change the pitch.
Sound Post
A small wooden dowel inside the violin body that transmits sound vibrations from the top plate to the bottom plate and contributes to the instrument's tone.
Nut
A small, raised piece of ebony at the end of the fingerboard that keeps the strings spaced properly and at the correct height above the fingerboard.
Soundboard (Top Plate)
The front piece of wood on the violin body that vibrates when the strings are played, greatly influencing the quality and loudness of the sound.
Back Plate
The rear piece of wood of the violin body that, along with the top plate, resonates to increase the sound produced by the strings.
Ribs
The sides of the violin that connect the top and back plates and help to form the hollow body of the instrument which resonates to create sound.
Tail Gut
A loop of gut or synthetic material that secures the tailpiece to the end button or saddle, allowing for tension adjustment of the violin strings.
End Button
A small wooden or metallic pin located at the end of the violin to which the tail gut is attached, thus anchoring the tailpiece.
Purfling
The decorative inlay near the edges of the violin's top and back plates, which also helps prevent cracks from spreading into the body of the instrument.
Bass Bar
A long wooden strip glued to the inside of the top plate that provides support and helps to balance the sound between the lower and higher strings.
