Spiccato
A bowing technique where the bow bounces lightly upon the string.
Legato
Smooth and connected bow strokes with no audible breaks between notes.
Staccato
Short, detached notes achieved by stopping the bow after each stroke.
Detache
Separate, clean bow strokes with a clear beginning and ending, but not as short as staccato.
Col legno
Playing with the wood of the bow rather than the hair, producing a percussive sound.
Sul tasto
Bowing over the fingerboard to produce a soft, flautando sound.
Sul ponticello
Bowing near the bridge to create a tense, glassy sound.
Tremolo
Moving the bow rapidly back and forth on a note to create a trembling effect.
Martele
A hammered bow stroke that creates a sharply accented, percussive sound.
Sautille
A rapid, bouncing bow stroke that is lighter and faster than spiccato.
Ricochet
Dropping the bow on the string so that it bounces naturally, producing a series of rapid notes.
Flautando
Playing lightly and across the string to create a flute-like sound.
Louré
Gentle pulsing without stopping the bow between notes, giving a slight emphasis.
Colle
A sticky bow stroke where the bow briefly sticks to and then releases from the string.
Portato
Several notes lightly re-articulated within one bow stroke, maintaining a connected sound.
