Walking Against the Wind
Mimes simulate walking in place while leaning forward and pushing against an invisible force. The use of slow motion and exaggerated facial expressions can help to convey the struggle against a strong wind.
The Ladder
Mimes act as if they are climbing a ladder by alternating hand movements upwards along with corresponding leg movements. Each step needs to be well-articulated with a pause to mimic the balance one would need on an actual ladder.
Trapped in a Box
This involves creating the notion of being enclosed in a small, invisible box. The performer explores and reacts to the confinement, often placing their hands on the walls or ceiling and showcasing expressions of frustration or claustrophobia.
The Wall
The performer pretends to encounter an invisible wall. They use their hands to explore the space, reacting as if they're touching a real barrier, maintaining tension in their hands and fingers as if experiencing actual pressure.
The Lean
A technique where the mime seems to lean on an invisible prop, like a rail or a table. The performer must keep one hand in a fixed position in space as a point of contact, and angle their body accordingly to sell the illusion.
Climbing Stairs
Pretend to climb a set of invisible stairs. The mime uses leg and arm movements coordinated with levels of height to simulate each step taken. A steady gaze as if focusing on each step helps to enhance the illusion.
Isolation Movements
A technique where only one part of the body moves while the rest remains stationary, isolating that part to create various visual effects, such as creating the illusion of an object moving while the mime's body stays in place.
Facial Expressions
Mimes use exaggerated facial expressions to convey emotions, reactions, or states of mind as part of their performance. Emotions can be conveyed through movements of the eyes, eyebrows, mouth, and the entire face.
The Rope Pull
The artist mimes the action of pulling a rope with both hands, using resistance to make it seem like the rope is real. The rope can be pulled towards or away from the body, with corresponding steps to enhance the illusion.
Animal Imitation
Performing as an animal, the mime uses their body and facial expressions to capture the essence of the chosen creature. Key characteristics should be exaggerated to make the silent performance clear to the audience.
Heavy Lifting
The mime shows the effort of lifting an unseen heavy weight by using tense muscles, facial expressions of strain, and slow, deliberate movements as if lifting something very substantial.
The Glass
Mime holding a glass by shaping the hand around its invisible contour. The glass can be 'filled', 'drunk from', and 'placed' on a surface, always making sure to maintain the illusion of its shape and weight.
The Balloon
Pretend to hold an imaginary balloon. Performer mimics the lightness and movements of a balloon floating away and uses their body and hands to express the unpredictable motions caused by an 'invisible' string's tug.
Mirror Exercise
Two performers mimic each other’s movements synchronously, creating the illusion that one is the mirror image of the other. This requires intense focus and precise timing to maintain the reflection effect.
Object Manipulation
This involves miming the weight, size, and texture of an invisible object when picking it up, moving it, or interacting with it in any way, giving the audience a sense of its physical properties without it being seen.
