Backstage
Area that is hidden from the audience where many behind-the-scenes activities take place, such as set changes and actor preparation.
Cyclorama
A large curtain or wall, often curved, at the back of the stage used to create the illusion of sky or as a background for projected images.
Grid
The framework of beams above the stage from which lights, curtains, and scenery are hung.
Trapdoor
A hinged or removable panel in the floor of the stage used for special effects, entrances, and exits.
Wings
Sections on the sides of the stage, concealed from the audience, where actors await their cues and scenery can be kept out of sight.
Proscenium Arch
The frame or opening that separates the stage from the auditorium, providing the effect of looking into a room.
Apron
A part of the stage that extends past the proscenium arch toward the audience, often used for closer interaction with the audience.
Fire Curtain
A safety feature designed to prevent the spread of fire from the stage to the auditorium, lowering automatically in an emergency.
Fly Space
The area above the stage where scenery, drops, and lights are suspended, allowing for the vertical movement of set pieces.
Orchestra Pit
The area between the stage and the auditorium, usually below stage level, where the orchestra plays during a musical performance.
Scrim
A piece of fabric used as a drop in the theater, which can appear opaque or translucent depending on the lighting.
Grand Drape/Main Curtain
The curtain at the very front of the stage that conceals the stage from the audience before the show and during intermissions.
