Beneficence
Definition: The ethical principle that a healthcare provider should act in the best interest of the patient, aiming to do good and prevent harm. Example Scenario: A doctor provides pain relief for a patient in chronic pain, attempting to improve their quality of life.
Autonomy
Definition: Respect for the individual's right to make informed, uncoerced decisions about their own health care. Example Scenario: A patient is deciding whether to undergo a risky surgery after being thoroughly informed of all the potential outcomes and risks.
Non-Maleficence
Definition: The obligation to not inflict harm intentionally. It corresponds to the medical precept 'primum non nocere', or 'first, do no harm'. Example Scenario: A healthcare professional choosing not to prescribe a medication that has a high potential for addiction or adverse effects.
Justice
Definition: The principle of fairness in the distribution of healthcare resources and respect for individuals' rights. Example Scenario: Allocating organs for transplant based on medical need rather than a patient's social status or ability to pay.
