Justice as Fairness
Rawls' conception of justice which asserts that the principles of justice are agreed to in an initial situation that is fair.
The Priority of Liberty
Rawls' principle highlighting that basic liberties can only be restricted for the sake of liberty and not for economic advantage or social welfare.
Reflective Equilibrium
A method used by Rawls to justify moral principles by seeking coherence between our considered judgments, moral theories, and principles.
The Difference Principle
Part of Rawls' second principle of justice, stating that social and economic inequalities should be arranged to benefit the least advantaged in society.
Well-Ordered Society
According to Rawls, a society in which everyone accepts and knows that the others accept the same principles of justice, and the social institutions reflect these principles.
Veil of Ignorance
A metaphorical veil that conceals the social positions and personal characteristics of individuals so they can formulate principles of justice impartially.
Public Reason
A criterion for political reasoning in a democratic society, according to which citizens reason about fundamental political questions using concepts that all can accept.
The Two Principles of Justice
Rawls' proposed principles of justice: (1) Each person has an equal right to basic liberties, (2) Social and economic inequalities should be arranged so they are both (a) to the greatest benefit of the least advantaged and (b) attached to positions open to all under conditions of fair equality of opportunity.
The Original Position
A hypothetical situation designed by Rawls where representatives select principles of justice behind a veil of ignorance, not knowing their place in society to ensure fairness.
The Basic Structure of Society
The way in which the major social institutions distribute fundamental rights and duties and determine the division of advantages from social cooperation.
