Behaviorist Theory
B.F. Skinner, This theory posits that language is learned through operant conditioning and reinforcement. Children learn to speak by mimicking and receiving feedback from their environment.
Nativist Theory
Noam Chomsky, Proposes that the ability to learn language is hard-wired into the brain. Chomsky introduced the concept of the 'Language Acquisition Device' (LAD), an innate mechanism that facilitates the learning of language.
Social Interactionist Theory
Lev Vygotsky, Emphasizes the role of social interaction in language development. Language acquisition is seen as a byproduct of social interactions and cognitive development, facilitated by the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD).
Cognitive Theory
Jean Piaget, Suggests that language acquisition is part of a broader cognitive development. Children learn language as they develop their understanding of the world and go through stages such as sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational.
