Definition of Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)
The Zone of Proximal Development refers to the difference between what a learner can do without help and what they can achieve with guidance and encouragement from a skilled partner. In education, ZPD guides the teacher to recognize the skills that students can develop with appropriate support, tailoring instruction to their current level of potential development.
Scaffolding in Relation to ZPD
Scaffolding is a teaching method that involves providing support to students as they are learning new concepts, gradually removing the support as the student becomes more proficient. It directly applies to the ZPD by finding the right level of difficulty to challenge the learner but not so hard that it is outside their ZPD.
Role of More Knowledgeable Others (MKOs)
More Knowledgeable Others, or MKOs, are individuals with a higher level of understanding or expertise than the learner in certain areas. They help facilitate learning within the ZPD by guiding, providing resources, or teaching. Teachers, peers, or even technology can act as MKOs in education, enhancing the learning process through appropriate support and interaction.
