Earth's Interior Layers
5
Flashcards
0/5
Crust
Composition: Solid rock; includes both continental (granite) and oceanic (basalt) types. State: Solid. Characteristics: Thinnest layer, varying from 5 to 70 km in thickness.
Mantle
Composition: Ultramafic rocks, primarily peridotite. State: Solid (with some plasticity, allowing for flow). Characteristics: Makes up about 84% of Earth's volume; temperatures from 500 to 4,000 degrees Celsius.
Outer Core
Composition: Liquid iron-nickel alloy. State: Liquid. Characteristics: Creates Earth's magnetic field; about 2,200 km thick.
Inner Core
Composition: Solid iron-nickel alloy. State: Solid. Characteristics: Extreme temperatures and pressures; solid due to immense pressure despite high heat.
Lithosphere
Composition: Crust and the uppermost mantle. State: Solid. Characteristics: Rigid, broken into tectonic plates that move atop the asthenosphere.
