Flashcards

Strike-Slip Fault
Movement: Lateral - blocks of crust slide past each other horizontally. Associated stress: Shear.
Oblique Fault
Movement: Combination of vertical and horizontal - showing features of both strike-slip and dip-slip. Associated stress: Shear and either tensional or compressional.
Thrust Fault
Movement: Similar to reverse faults but with a lower angle - the hanging wall moves up over the footwall. Associated stress: Compressional.
Growth Fault
Movement: Divergent - hanging wall moves downward while sedimentary layers continue to deposit on the footwall. Associated stress: Tensional.
Normal Fault
Movement: Divergent - the hanging wall moves downward relative to the footwall. Associated stress: Tensional.
Right-Lateral Fault
Movement: Lateral - when facing across the fault line, the other side moves to the right. Associated stress: Shear.
Reverse Fault
Movement: Convergent - the hanging wall moves upward relative to the footwall. Associated stress: Compressional.
Left-Lateral Fault
Movement: Lateral - when facing across the fault line, the other side moves to the left. Associated stress: Shear.
