Water Footprint
The Water Footprint is a measure of freshwater use that considers both direct and indirect application of water by a consumer or producer. It is part of a broader idea of virtual water trade and helps assess the impact of human activity on global water resources.
Green Building
Green Building refers to both a structure and the application of processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from planning to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolition.
Clean Technology
Clean Technology (CleanTech) refers to products, services, or processes that use energy, water, and raw materials more efficiently and responsibly. It's a means to create electricity and fuels, with a smaller environmental footprint than traditional technology and minimal pollution or waste.
Cradle to Cradle Design
Cradle to Cradle Design is a biomimetic approach to the design of products and systems. It models human industry on nature's processes, wherein materials are viewed as nutrients circulating in healthy, safe metabolisms. It is a holistic philosophy that goes beyond sustainability and into environmental and social responsibility.
Ecological Footprint
The Ecological Footprint measures the demand on and supply of nature. It represents the amount of biologically productive land and sea area needed to regenerate the resources a human population uses and to absorb and render harmless the corresponding waste. It is used to gauge overconsumption.
Circular Economy
The Circular Economy is an economic system aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources. It is based on three principles: design out waste and pollution, keep products and materials in use, and regenerate natural systems.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Corporate Social Responsibility is a business approach that contributes to sustainable development by delivering economic, social, and environmental benefits for all stakeholders. CSR strategies encourage companies to make a positive impact on the environment and stakeholders including consumers, employees, investors, communities, and others.
Carbon Footprint
A Carbon Footprint is the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by an individual, event, organization, or product, expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent. It is a critical measure for understanding and managing the impacts of climate change.
Biodiversity Conservation
Biodiversity Conservation involves protecting and managing natural habitats and wildlife to prevent extinction or degradation of species. It ensures that natural resources are sustainable and resilient, providing ecological services we depend upon.
Sustainable Development
Sustainable Development is a development paradigm that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It integrates three core elements: economic development, social inclusion, and environmental protection.
Renewable Energy
Renewable Energy is derived from natural processes that are replenished constantly. This includes sunlight, geothermal heat, wind, tides, water, and various forms of biomass. It plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and achieving energy sustainability.
Smart Growth
Smart Growth refers to a set of principles for urban planning that seeks to prevent urban sprawl and promote sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. It often includes compact, transit-oriented, walkable, bicycle-friendly land use, including neighborhood schools, complete streets, and mixed-use development with a range of housing choices.
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
Environmental Impact Assessment is a process that ensures that the environmental implications of decisions are taken into account before the decisions are made. Through this, the potential environmental effects of projects are identified, predicted, evaluated, and mitigated.
Sustainable Agriculture
Sustainable Agriculture is the act of farming using principles of ecology, the study of relationships between organisms and their environment. It has the specific goal of environmentally friendly and socio-economically sustainable production of food and fibre.
