Pirouette
A complete turn of the body on one foot, with the other foot (working leg) in passé or cou-de-pied.
Battement
A controlled kick in which a dancer swiftly lifts their leg to the front, side, or back.
Jeté
A leap from one foot to the other in which one leg appears to be 'thrown' in the direction of the movement.
Isolations
Movement of only one part of the body independently from the rest, common in jazz.
Jazz Walk
A stylized walk where dancers use splayed hands and bent knees, often performed low to the ground.
Fondu
A movement where one leg is bent (pliéd) while the other leg is stretched out, often used before a leap.
Fosse
A stylized form of jazz dance with turned-in knees, rounded shoulders, and articulated hands, named after choreographer Bob Fosse.
Tuck Jump
A jump in which the dancer brings their knees up to the chest during the peak of the jump.
Ball Change
A quick transfer of weight from one foot to the other, often a prep step for turns or jumps.
Pas de bourrée
A three-step movement often used as a linking step, involving a sequence of behind, side, and front.
Shimmy
A dance move where the shoulders move back and forth quickly.
Kick Ball Change
A dance step consisting of a kick followed by the ball change, involving a partial weight transfer on the balls of the feet.
Pencil Turn
A spin on one foot with the other leg extended, keeping the body very straight, like a pencil.
Contract
A fundamental movement in modern dance where the dancer's torso is concaved and rounded, often initiated from the pelvis.
Snake
A smooth, sinuous movement of the spine, starting from the head and moving down through the body.
Axel Turn
A turn in the air with legs in a split position. The dancer leaps, makes a half turn, and lands on the other foot.
Hitch Kick
A kick that is preceded by a small hop or 'hitch' on the opposite leg.
Attitude
A position in which the dancer stands on one leg with the other lifted, knee bent so the lower leg is angled.
Lindy Hop
A dance move named after the aviator Charles Lindbergh, it involves an eight-count move with a syncopated rhythm typically done with a partner.
Drag
A movement where one foot is dragged along the ground while the body moves sideways.
Boogie Woogie
A repetitive, swung note or shuffle rhythm, dancing to the boogie-woogie style of blues with a characteristic bounce.
Stomp Off
A jazz step where a foot forcefully steps down, making a stomping sound, usually to mark the timing.
Camel Walk
A stylish, smooth walk where the dancer moves with undulating hips and bent knees, resembling a camel's gait.
Fall off the Log
A step that resembles a log roller's movements, involving a moment of loss of balance as if one might fall.
Suzy Q
A step where the dancer crosses one foot in front of the other while swiveling the heels in and out, often with a sliding motion.
