Parry
A defensive move where one combatant knocks aside their opponent's weapon. Often used in sword fights.
Riposte
An offensive action made immediately after a parry. It is a counterattack following the opponent's failed hit.
Punch
A fist strike aimed at an opponent. In stage combat, punches are thrown with control and often do not make actual contact.
Slap
An open-handed hit to the face or body. It's visually dramatic and audible, but the contact is controlled and typically minimal in stage combat.
Kick
Striking the opponent with the foot. In stage combat, the kick is aimed to miss or lightly touch, with the reaction selling the impact.
Fall
A controlled descent to the ground, simulating being knocked down or injured. It's designed to protect the performer while looking realistic.
Grapple
A move where combatants come into close contact and struggle without striking blows. It requires precise choreography to maintain the illusion of struggle.
Hair Pull
A simulated action where it appears that one performer is pulling the other's hair. The receiver of the action often holds onto the attacker's hand to control the movement.
Sword Fight
A choreographed sequence of swordplay moves, typically involving attacks, parries, and footwork that imitate an actual duel.
Dagger Stab
A staged move where one performer appears to stab another with a dagger. The blade is often retractable or obscured from the audience's view.
Body Slam
A staged wrestling maneuver where one performer lifts and then simulates slamming their opponent onto the ground.
Choke Hold
A mimic of a strangling grip around the neck. The choking action is simulated and the performers ensure actual pressure is never applied.
Headbutt
A simulated forward thrust of the head towards an opponent, designed to look like a blow but typically involves no or minimal contact.
Stage Dagger
A prop weapon used for staged combat. It often has safety features like a retractable blade to simulate stabbing without injury.
Unarmed Combat
A sequence of choreographed fighting moves without the use of weapons. It involves punches, kicks, blocks, and dodges.
Sell a Blow
The act of reacting in a way that convinces the audience a hit has been taken. The performer must use body language and facial expressions to 'sell' the impact.
Breakaway Prop
A specially designed object that looks solid but breaks or shatters easily upon impact, used to add realism to staged combat scenes without harming performers.
Blood Pack
A small pouch of fake blood that can be concealed on a performer's body or costume, designed to burst upon impact to simulate a bleeding wound.
Theatrical Fall
A technique where the performer falls to the ground in a controlled manner to simulate being pushed, tripped, or knocked out.
Tumbling
Acrobatic maneuvers such as rolls or flips integrated into stage combat to display characters' agility or to simulate being thrown or knocked down.
