Traditional Paper Cut-Out
An animation technique involving the use of flat characters, props, and backgrounds cut from materials such as paper, card, stiff fabric, or even photographs.
Flash Animation
An animation technique which involves the use of Adobe Flash (now Animate CC) to create vector graphics-based animation.
Computer Animation (3D)
Animation created using computer graphics where models are built on a computer and then animated to appear as three-dimensional images.
Sand Animation
A method of animation wherein animators move sand on a surface to create images and shapes that evolve throughout a performance or film.
Pin Screen Animation
Animation created by pressing objects into a screen filled with pins, which creates shadows and shapes that can be animated.
Vector-Based Animation
A digital form of animation where vector graphics are used to create movements. Such animations often result in smooth, scalable images.
Motion Capture
A technique where the movements of real-world actors are captured and then translated into digital character models in a computer program.
Typographical Animation
Animation technique that involves the movement or transformation of text and fonts to express ideas or create visual interest.
Clay Animation
A form of stop motion animation that uses figures made of clay or a similar malleable material to create frame-by-frame animation.
Puppet Animation
A method of animation that involves physically manipulating a puppet to imitate movement, which is then captured frame by frame.
Stop Motion
An animation technique where physical objects are moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a fast sequence.
Cel Animation
A traditional animation technique where each frame is hand-drawn on a transparent sheet. Often used for classic 2D animation in films and TV shows.
Cut-Out Animation
An animation technique that uses characters or objects cut from paper, card or photographs and manipulated to simulate movement.
Rotoscoping
A technique in which animators trace over live-action film movement frame by frame for use in animated films.
