Magellanic Clouds
The Magellanic Clouds are two irregular dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way. They interact gravitationally with our galaxy, contributing to tidal forces and high-velocity gas streams.
Galactic Disk
The Galactic Disk composes the main part of the Milky Way, consisting predominantly of stars, gas, and dust. It includes the spiral arms and is where most of the galaxy's star formation occurs.
Halo
The Galactic Halo is a spherical region surrounding the Milky Way. It contains older stars, globular clusters, and dark matter, contributing to the gravitational field that affects the galaxy's rotation.
Dark Matter
Dark Matter is an unseen component that exerts gravitational forces, affecting the rotation curve of the Milky Way. It is critical to understanding the galaxy's mass and the formation of large-scale structures.
Spiral Arms
Spiral arms are regions of higher density in the Milky Way, containing a large number of stars, gas, and dust. They are thought to be areas of star formation and play a pivotal role in the galaxy's spiral structure.
Stellar Populations
Stellar Populations include all the stars in the Milky Way, categorized mainly into Population I (metal-rich) and Population II (metal-poor) stars. These populations have different distributions and are clues to the galaxy's evolutionary history.
Molecular Clouds
Molecular Clouds are dense regions within the ISM, primarily composed of molecular hydrogen. They are the primary sites of star formation within the Milky Way.
Bulge
The Galactic Bulge is a dense region of stars at the center of the Milky Way. It has a boxy or peanut shape and is composed of older stars, with a complex internal structure.
Interstellar Medium (ISM)
The ISM is a mixture of gas and dust between the stars in the Milky Way, playing a key role in star formation and the evolution of the galaxy by recycling material from dying stars.
Galactic Center
The Galactic Center is the rotational center of the Milky Way, hosting a supermassive black hole known as Sagittarius A*. It influences the motion of stars and gas throughout the galaxy.
