Inciting Incident
The event or decision that begins a story's problem. Everything that follows is caused by this incident, setting the main story into motion.
Resolution
The unfolding or solution of a complicated issue in a story. Also known as the denouement, it occurs after the falling action and brings the story to a satisfactory end.
Exposition
The introduction of background information within a story. This information can include the setting, events occurring before the main plot, characters' backstories, etc.
Rising Tension
The build-up of conflict and complications for the protagonist, which increases audience interest and emotional investment in the narrative.
Plot Twist
An unexpected development that changes the direction of the story, meant to surprise the audience and keep them engaged.
Call to Adventure
The moment when the protagonist is first given notice that everything is going to change, whether they know it or not. Often the first of the Hero's Journey stages.
Crisis
A crucial stage in the story when the protagonist faces a decisive point. The crisis usually leads to or overlaps with the story's climax.
Point of No Return
A moment in the story when the protagonist is pushed beyond the edge of indecision and commits to a particular course of action, ensuring that there's no turning back from the central conflict.
Rising Action
The series of events that create suspense, interest, and tension in a narrative, leading up to the climax.
Falling Action
Occurs after the climax, when the main problem of the story resolves. It leads to the story's closure.
Subplot
A secondary strand of the plot that is a supporting side story for any story or the main plot. Subplots may connect to main plots, in either time and place or in thematic significance.
Flashback
A scene set in a time earlier than the main story. Used to provide background and context to the current events of the narrative.
Climax
The most intense, exciting, or important point of the story. Here the main conflicts are faced and the protagonist will undergo significant change.
Conflict
A serious disagreement or argument, typically a protracted one. In storytelling, it's the central contention or problem facing the protagonist, driving the narrative forward.
Foreshadowing
The use of indicative words or phrases and hints that set the stage for a story to unfold and give the reader a hint of something that is going to happen without revealing the story or spoiling the suspense.
