Slug Line
Written in all caps, it includes INT./EXT., location, and time of day. It signals the start of every new scene.
Action
Describes what is happening visually in a scene; written in present tense and often utilizes active voice.
Character Name
Placed above dialogue in caps; indicates which character is speaking.
Dialogue
The words spoken by characters; centered and under the character's name.
Parenthetical
A direction for the actor, written in parentheses under the character's name, before the dialogue.
Transition
Indicates how one scene transitions to another; typically all caps and aligned to the right.
Shot
Specifies a type of camera shot; often capitalized within action lines or on a separate line.
Scene Heading
Same as slug line; includes INT./EXT., location, and time of day.
Voice Over (V.O.)
Indicates offscreen or narration dialogue; placed next to the character's name.
Off Screen (O.S.)
Indicates that the character is not visible in the scene but is speaking; placed next to the character's name.
Extension
Included after the character’s name, it denotes how the dialogue is heard, e.g., V.O. (Voice Over) or O.S. (Off Screen).
Montage
A series of shots that condense time, space, and information, usually with the word 'MONTAGE' centered and followed by the shots.
Series of Shots
A list of brief scenes, usually with the heading 'SERIES OF SHOTS' and formatted with each shot as a mini-slug line.
Intercut
A script direction denoting action taking place in two locations at the same time, formatted with the word 'INTERCUT'.
Character Introduction
When a character appears for the first time, their name is capitalized and often followed by a brief description.
Extension (More Detail)
Used to provide more information about how the dialogue is communicated, for example, 'into phone', 'in Spanish', etc.
More and Continued
Indicate that dialogue continues across a page break; '(MORE)' at the bottom, and '(CONTINUED)' at the top of the next page.
Superimpose (SUPER)
Text is added over the screen image, such as a location or date; formatted with 'SUPER:' followed by the text.
Character's Voice
The voice of an unseen character, implemented to add depth; formatted similarly to an O.S. or V.O.
Dual Dialogue
When two characters speak at the same time, their dialogue blocks are positioned side-by-side.
