The Road Back
The hero starts to return home, often pursued by the forces of the antagonist. Example: In Back to the Future, Marty McFly needs to return to his own time.
The Resurrection
The hero faces a final test where everything is at stake. Example: In Avengers: Endgame, the heroes have their final battle against Thanos.
Return with the Elixir
The hero returns home transformed with a solution to their community's problems. Example: In The Matrix, Neo returns with the power to save humanity.
The Ordinary World
Introduces the hero in their normal environment before the adventure begins. Example: 'The Shire' in The Lord of the Rings where Frodo Baggins lives a peaceful life.
Reward (Seizing the Sword)
The hero takes possession of the treasure or knowledge they have been seeking. Example: In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones finds the Ark of the Covenant.
The Ordeal
The hero confronts death or their greatest fear. The central crisis of the journey. Example: Simba faces Scar in The Lion King.
Meeting with the Mentor
The hero encounters a mentor figure who provides advice, training, or magical aid. Example: Neo meets Morpheus in The Matrix, who teaches him about the reality of the world.
Final Confrontation
This is the climax of the story where the hero must use all they have learned to overcome the challenge. Example: In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry faces Voldemort in their final duel.
New Life
This shows the result of the hero's journey, depicting their new place in the world. Example: At the end of Gladiator, Maximus has changed Rome and is revered after his death.
Refusal of the Call
The hero hesitates or refuses to take on the challenge due to fear or other obstacles. Example: In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker initially refuses to join Obi-Wan on his mission.
Crossing the Threshold
The hero commits to the adventure and crosses into a new, more dangerous world. Example: Dorothy enters the Land of Oz in The Wizard of Oz.
The Call to Adventure
The hero is faced with an event or challenge that initiates their journey. Example: When Harry Potter receives the Hogwarts letter in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
Allies are Gained
The hero meets characters who will help them on their journey. Example: In The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo meets the rest of the Fellowship.
Tests, Allies and Enemies
The hero faces challenges and makes allies or encounters enemies. Example: In The Hunger Games, Katniss faces trials and forms alliances while in the arena.
Approach to the Inmost Cave
The hero prepares for a significant challenge within a dangerous place. Example: Harry and his friends preparing to find the Philosopher’s Stone in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
Hero's Commitment
The point at which the protagonist is fully committed to the journey and there’s no turning back. Example: In Titanic, when Jack decides to save Rose despite the danger.
Hero is Introduced
Often the first scene after the credits, where we see the hero in their everyday life. Example: In Spider-Man, we see Peter Parker navigating high school life.
